Liability

Service-Learning Liability Guidelines

Since service-learning projects are part of the academic program of Keene State College, students are covered for liability off campus by the University System of New Hampshire umbrella policy.

However, there are several specific situations where you should take extra precautions.

  1. USNH strongly encourages faculty, staff and students to use public transportation or to rent vehicles from our contracted vendor, Enterprise, when transporting students for class projects. In you are not able to get transportation and students drive their own vehicles, you must have every student that drives submit a copy of their drivers license and their insurance policy to the Service-Learning Coordinator. The Service-Learning Office will keep copies of the driver’s records for KSC.
  2. If agencies request a contract regarding liability, the contract must be reviewed by the Service-Learning Coordinator and/or Jim Draper. Please do not sign any contracts without coordinator approval.
  3. Students must have health insurance to participate in off campus activities. Students that do not have insurance should contact the service-learning coordinator.
  4. Agencies that request “Confidentiality Agreements” should contact Jim Draper. Faculty are advised to not sign any HIPPA agreements for our students.
  5. If you have any questions about community partner request for contracts, student clearance, etc… please contact Jim Draper 358-2492 or Angela Yang Handy, Service Learning Coordinator 358-2356.
